Positioning & Mechanics: See the Whole Play
The best officials aren't the fastest — they're the ones in the right place. Positioning is what lets you referee the defense, see the whole play, and sell the call with confidence.
Principles
- Referee the defense — the foul usually starts with the defender.
- Keep an open look; never straight-line the play.
- Move to improve — a step or two changes a guess into a call.
- Stop, then call — officiate from a settled stance, not on the run.
Drill these in every scrimmage and clinic. Mechanics become muscle memory, and muscle memory is what holds up under pressure.
